Privacy policy

1. Children under 18

The Services are not directed to children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you are under 18, please do not use the Services or provide any information. If you believe a child under 18 has given us information, contact us at privacy@moneysleuth.news and we will delete it.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us

• Your email address when you subscribe.
• Your city and state. We ask for this at signup to confirm whether you’re in our Portland-metro coverage area; if you’re outside it, we hold your email on a waitlist until we expand to where you are.
• Information you send us directly — such as messages, replies, reader-poll and vote selections, and news tips or feedback. News tips can be submitted anonymously; when you leave the email field blank, we keep no record of who you are.

Information collected automatically

When you visit the website or open or click our emails, we and our providers may collect technical information by automated means such as cookies, pixels, and similar technology. This may include your IP address, device and browser type, the pages or links you interact with, and the date and time of your visit or an email open or click. Our email platform, Resend, records opens and clicks so we can measure engagement.

We do not use third-party web analytics or advertising trackers. And when you submit a news tip, we deliberately collect as little as possible: the email field is optional, and we do not log your IP address for tip submissions.

3. How we use your information

We use personal information to:

• send you the newsletter and operate the Services;
• confirm whether you’re in our coverage area and, if not, hold your email on a waitlist until we expand there;
• respond to your messages, tips, and requests;
• run reader polls and votes;
• understand how the newsletter and website are used, and improve them;
• protect the Services and prevent abuse, fraud, and unauthorized access;
• comply with law and enforce our terms; and
• with your consent, for any other purpose we describe when we collect the information.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

4. How we share information

We do not sell your information. We share it only as follows:

• Service providers who operate the Services for us (see the list below), such as our email platform, website host, and database, and who may process your information only to provide services to us.
• Legal and safety: to comply with a law, subpoena, or government request, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Money Sleuth, our readers, or others.
• Business transfer: if Money Sleuth is ever sold, merged, or transferred, your information may be part of that transaction.
• With your consent, or at your direction — for example, when you forward the newsletter or reply to a public call for tips.

5. Service providers

We rely on third parties to run the Services. Their handling of your information is governed by their own privacy policies:

• Email newsletter and subscriptions: Resend — resend.com/legal/privacy-policy
• Website hosting: Vercel — vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy
• Database and file storage: Supabase — supabase.com/privacy

We do not use third-party web analytics or advertising networks, and Money Sleuth is free — we do not take payments, so no payment processor handles your information.

6. Cookies and tracking

The website and our emails use cookies and similar technology to make the Services work, remember your preferences, and measure engagement (such as whether an email was opened or a link clicked). Most browsers let you refuse or delete cookies through their settings, though some features may not work as well if you do. We do not use advertising cookies or behavioral ad trackers.

7. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and to opt out of certain processing. Oregon residents have these rights under the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act, and residents of California and several other states have similar rights under their own laws.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at privacy@moneysleuth.news. We may need to verify your identity before responding. You also have the right to unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link at the bottom of every email.

8. Data retention

We keep your information for as long as you are subscribed and as needed for the purposes in this Policy, then delete or de-identify it, unless we are required to keep it longer by law. If you unsubscribe, we may retain a minimal record to honor your unsubscribe request.

9. Data security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Third-party links

The newsletter and website link to other sites — source documents, news articles, and public records. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites; review their policies separately.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here and change the “Last updated” date. Material changes may also be announced in the newsletter or on the website.
